Walford’s Candesence sprints to victory on Super Sunday at Hamilton

- By GORDON BROWN

Mark Walford was all smiles after Candesence scooped the £35,000 Sky Bet Sunday Series Sprint at Hamilton Park.

Ridden by Dougie Costello, the 9-1 chance saw off Fine Wine by a length and a quarter and the Yorkshire trainer said: “It’s taken a little while for her to get the hang of things but she’s been better at six furlongs this year.

"She’s won more than she cost today and the prize money is pretty amazing. On her last two runs at Wolverhampton she wasn’t beaten far so it’s good to get her head back in front.”

Mark and Charlie Johnston landed the Sky Bet Sunday Series 3YO Sprint with I’m A Gambler, ridden by Ben Curtis.

“He was a two-time course and distance winner prior to today and he clearly like the track,” Mark Johnston said. “It’s a fantastic card with tremendous money and it shows off Hamilton Park to a lot of people who may not have known just what can be done.”

Keith Dalgleish struck at his local track when Haizoom took the Sky Bet Sunday Series Stayers Handicap in the hands of Sam James.

Winning owner Stuart Morrison said: “Keith told me he thought she would win as she was very fizzy and fresh when seventh here last Sunday. If her mark doesn’t go too high there might another opportunity for her in this excellent series.”

Meanwhile, Iain Jardine is hoping for another big run from Rose Bandit in today’s feature race at Musselburgh.

A course and distance winner on Easter Saturday, she is in the line-up for the £13,000 Join Racing TV Now Handicap over the same five furlongs at the East Lothian venue

Jardine said: “She’s never looked back since winning that selling handicap at Hamilton last June. She only just got there on the line when she won at Easter and she wasn’t beaten very far at Ayr the other day either.”

At Windsor today, Modern News can make all the headlines in the Listed Fitzdares Royal Windsor Stakes.

The gelded son of Shamardal was a three-times winner in handicap company during his three-year-old season and having made the podium at Listed level in Meydan during the winter, returns to that grade having been successful once again in the handicap ranks last time.

Although only able to finish seventh when sent off 5-1 for the Lincoln in March, Charlie Appleby's four-year-old bounced back in style to win Newbury's Spring Cup.

Fast ground suited him well on that occasion and with conditions set to be lightning quick here, there are plenty of signs pointing Modern News' way for this one-mile contest, with the Appleby team continuing to operate at nearly 40 per cent.

David Evans' Radio Goo Goo can send punters gaga when she attempts to open her account at the third attempt in Windsor's Springboard/ebf Fillies' Novice Stakes.

William Buick takes over in the saddle and her experience will make her tough to beat in receipt of 6lb from Salisbury scorer Katey Kontent.
