Dunfermline has een named Scotland’s eighth city in honour of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. @R55GJW tweeted: “Dunfermline? Places like Paisley, Falkirk and East Kilbride should have been cities long ago. Even twinning Motherwell and Wishaw or Airdrie and Coatbridge. Long past time city status was defined and not 'awarded'." @Jimstenhouse wrote: “Very, very poor choice rather than St Andrews. Will we all have to pay for all the new signs and paperwork?” @Gsh777rash replied: “No, council have been pretending Dunfermline is city for years with its brown tourism signs. Unlike St Andrews with its famous golf course & uni which doesn’t need additional publicity. I seriously doubt currently Dunfermline gets much tourists coming to it.” @Northshoreface grumbled: “Ridiculous that Paisley has never been granted city status before. Meets all the criteria but probably suffers by being joined to Glasgow.” @Jaesblack56 replied: “Population isn't the only criteria to be a city.” @Kerrwatson1 queried: “What about Cumbernauld?” @laffs91 replied (inevitably): “What’s it called?” @simon_brooke waxed lyrically: “‘The king sits in Dunfermline toune, Drinking the blude-reid wine.’ He disnae sit in Dunfermline city, for it disnae scan. Is naethin sacret?” @almannysbunnet wrote: “Aye thanks, still not holding a jubilee party.” @VG3333VG said: “And congratulations to the other seven places also granted city status.” @sionacch119 wondered: “What actually is the point of this? Town or city, does it make a difference?” @Foresthills1903 answered: “Seems to put it on the map more and get more investment. Certainly that's happened with Inverness.” @boddyjoanna noted: “Interesting balance of locations of cities in Scotland – only 1 in the west of Scotland.” @nooshoosferra said: “Dunfermline Press has been referring to the city centre for years. Ahead of the curve. It'll always be a town to me.” @Alfrescodent protested: “Dunfermline is not a city!” @Scottd6168 shot back: “Yes we are!”
@lolls76 joked: “Guid to see you won something this season.”
