Rangers win in Hungary to progress as Glasgow City bow out to Roma

- By ANGUS WRIGHT

Rangers Women started their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win over Ferencvaros at the Stadio Katerinis.

A double from Jenny Danielsson and a late goal from Brogan Hay means they advance to the semi-final stage of the qualification campaign and will next face PAOK from Greece on Sunday.

However, Glasgow City suffered defeat in their quarter-final, going down 3-1 to Roma.

It was always going to be a difficult task for City to overcome the Italian giants and despite going in level at the break at Petershill Park, Roma scored twice in the second half to seal victory.

Meanwhile, Gianluca Scamacca scored his first West Ham goal as the Hammers began their European campaign with a 3-1 win over Danish club Viborg.

Italy striker Scamacca, David Moyes’ marquee summer signing from Sassuolo, netted a first-half header on his full debut.

Jarrod Bowen added a second after the break and although Viborg pulled one back, Michail Antonio rounded things off with the third.

It gave the Hammers some breathing space ahead of the second leg of this qualifying play-off in Denmark next week as they bid to make the group stages of the Europa Conference League.

West Ham were without Declan Rice and Aaron Cresswell, as well as Moyes, with all banned for various indiscretions in the agonising Europa League semifinal defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in May.

But Moyes watched on from the stands as almost £50 million worth of his summer acquisitions combined to give West Ham a 24th-minute lead.

Former Burnley winger Cornet worked his way to the byline, cut back inside and lifted over a cross for Scamacca to head home at the far post.

The second goal arrived in the 64th minute when Bowen picked the ball up 30 yards out, surged forward and pinged a low drive into the corner.

Four minutes later Viborg halved the lead through Jakob Bonde’s header before Antonio scored the Hammers’ third with tap-in from fellow sub Said Benrahma’s pull-back.
