Flagpoles apart

-

Columnist Joyce Mcmillan says both sides of the Indyref debate need to realise 'you can't eat a flag'.

You can't. But you can aspire to run your own country and be friends with your neighbours. Sadly, England does not understand the concept of friendship.

Patrick Morgan Yeah, like those friendly Nats in Perth the other night.

Henry Mcintosh Really? I’m English and have happily lived here for the last 26 years... so why are we not friendly?

Kenny Upton Patrick Morgan, our country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Your comment is just anti English xenophobia. Embarrassing.

Dave MCD No it's not. Being pro-scottish does not automatically mean ‘anti-english’.

Good article. It's about democracy, not nationalism. Labour and the Liberals need to dis-entangle themselves from their allegiance to the Tories flag-waving agenda before the current decline of UK politics can be reversed.

Campbell Scott Despite the headline the reality is it is one side that predominantly flag-waves, of course there is an element on the other side too but that is a minority. It’s no coincidence that the flag wavers of both the SNP and others on one side and the Tories on the other are, at face value, polar opposites who are mutually dependent for the larger part of their votes here in Scotland. Hence the flags, it suits both sides to deflect from the realities facing people today to which neither have answers.

James Mcdaid Not only was it surprising to read this article that aimed equally at the Yess'ers and No'ers, but also it was fair in its judgement of both sides. Too often we see on social media Scots dehumanise other Scots, their political opponents, using language that is more suitable to spit and sawdust pubs, and childish rhetoric more suitable for the playground.

Tommy Murphy Scotland exercising its right to choose its own future would only be an exercise in democracy and it would be recognised throughout the free world as something to be celebrated and those who stand against democracy will be utterly condemned as the fascist tyrants that they are, in Europe and beyond!
