PICK OF THE DAY
BOOKS Anthony Horowitz: Shaken, Not Stirred
There will be new James Bond films being made until at least 2037, according to media reports yesterday of a new distribution deal. Good timing, then, for Anthony Horowitz to make a Book Festival appearance. The author is now on his third James Bond thriller, With A Mind To Kill, in which Bond is accused of M’s murder and smeared as a traitor, with the only escape route requiring him to turn his back on the UK. Book Festival, 5.30pm, www.edbookfest.co.uk
THEATRE I Am From Reykjavik
“Part protest, part sculpture, part ceremony”, this new theatre installation is also described as artist Sonia Hughes’ “attempt to be a postracial, global citizen” and will take place at different locations in Edinburgh throughout the week. It’s part of the Horizon Showcase, a week of performances – mostly at Summerhall, Zoo and Dance Base – supported by Arts Council England and including work by Rashdash, the Vacuum Cleaner and more.
Portobello Promenade, 12pm-7pm, www.horizonshowcase.co.uk
BOOKS Book Festival Fringe Launch Show
If the Book Festival is a bit too respectable for you, here’s “the inaugural Book Festival Fringe”, created by Phil Kay and Stacey Clare, selfdescribed “authors, performers, social activists/active socialists”. Clare’s new book is The Ethical Stripper: Sex, Work And Labour Rights In The Night-time Economy, while comedian and Fringe regular Kay will launch “his three latest volumes of Psycho-geographical Travel Memoirs”. Pianodrome, 7pm, tonight until 25 August, www.pianodrome.org
