#MASTODON

As fears continued about the survival of Twitter in the face of Elon Musk’s treatment of employees, rival platform Mastodon was leading the pack of possible replacements. @pwnallthethings said: “For everyone else, a reminder that as this site implodes, Mastodon is a good place to preserve your social network as a backup. It's not particularly difficult to set up, and it's pretty similar functionality-wise. Not identical, but very similar.” @Teri_kanefield tweeted: “I think the Mastodon model is the best alternative. No ads. No algorithms. Groups (like journalists) can own their own servers and make their own rules. It's decentralised, so corporate or billionaire owners. I remember feeling lost on Twitter at first. New things take time."

@owillis said: “Whichever mastodon person comes up with a process that just hides the server selection thing from you will probably win, you don’t seem to understand how much of a weird hang point that is to normal people.” @Russellengland added: “If you're moving to Mastodon today, please don't be dismayed by the speed. It is slow today but it's probably due to 145,000 people signing up in the last 24 hours, 0.5m this week. One server admin said he had 150 users last week, today he has 50,000."

@richard_littler agreed: “People grumbling that Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mon-weds. Relax.”

@roxiqt joked: “By the age of 30, you should have: a Twitter account; a Mastodon account (in case Twitter dies); a Discord account (in case Mastodon dies); back pain.”

“If you're gonna get on Mastodon, I would like to apologise in advance for being the guy responsible for posts being called ‘Toots’. I thought it was funny. And it is, and it's even funnier that some people hate it. I take it back, I'm not sorry. Ha ha. Toots.”

@darsam12_ wrote: “Not going to Mastodon/giving my discord because if Twitter shuts down that's God's will to make my life more productive and successful.”
