Muir targets Mutola’s world 1000m mark
Laura Muir plans to finally capture a world record of her own to add to her glittering honour list.
The Olympic and world medallist has unveiled plans to smash Maria Mutola’s world indoor 1000 metres record at the World Indoor Tour Final in Birmingham on Saturday 25 February. The Scot, currently training in South Africa, set the secondquickest time in history when she beat Kelly Holmes’ British best with a mark of 2:31.93 in 2017 at the Midlands venue. Mozambique master Mutola still reigns supreme with her time of 2:30.94 but 29-yearold Muir has vowed to chase the record as a possible tune-up for March’s European Indoors in Istanbul. She said: “I have so many special memories from competing in Birmingham, so I am so verypleasedtobecomingback and targeting Maria Mutola’s world record. It is a distance I have had a good history in over the years, and the British recordin2017wasasignificant highlight in my career.”
