Tears for souvenirs /Suarez devastated as Uruguay pipped by South Korea
The World Cup’s last-16 kicks off in Qatar today, and yesterday Luis Suarez joined the list of big-name players heading home before the knockout stage even begins.
Kevin de Bruyne’s Belgium, Christian Eriksen’s Denmark and Ilkay Gundogan’s Germany suffered surprise early exits earlier in the week, and they were joined by Suarez’s Uruguay after the South Americans finished third in Group H.
Suarez, 35, was in tears at full-time at Al Janoub Stadium. Uruguay defeated Ghana 2-0 but it wasn’t enough to pip South Korea, who finished runners-up in the section following a dramatic 2-1 win over group winners Portugal.
In groupg last night, tournament favourites Brazil topped the section despite losing 1-0 against Cameroon and they were joined in the knockouts by Switzerland, who defeated Serbia 3-2.
There are two last-16 ties today. The Netherlands take on the USA this afternoon, while Australia face Lionel Messi’s Argentina tonight.
