Lording it over?
Labour would aim to abolish the “indefensible” House of Lords “as quickly as possible”, ideally within its first term, Sir Keir Starmer said. The proposal forms part of Labour’s blueprint for a “New Britain”, outlined in the report of its commission on the UK’S future – headed by ex-premier Gordon Brown.
He said House of Lords will be elected so not really doing away with them, just proposing to make it different.
Jacqui Pollock In every other Job/ profession I can think of there are performance standards to be met if you want to get paid. There are no such requirements for politicians. No requirements on attendances, rising to speak in debates, numbers of Committees attended, numbers of hours worked, no timesheets, nothing! And that is just plain wrong.
Julian Wilson There is general agreement that a 'second chamber' is a good way of holding Government accountable when it proposes new legislation or changing legislation. The House of Lords has rarely rejected legislation but has referred matters back to the Commons with constructive comments to improve proposed legislation. Even the SNP support the principle of a second chamber, which is urgently needed because of their history of proposing legislation that the Scottish and Supreme Courts have rejected.
Denys Mcnair So the House of Lords is important because its supposed to hold the government to account. Who holds the HOL to account? A corrupt club that you can be elevated to simply for being one of the PM'S favourites.
