US World Cup journalist Wahl died of aneurysm, his widow has revealed
Grant Wahl died from a ruptured aortic aneurysm while working at the World Cup in Qatar, says his widow.
Thejournalistcollapsedina World Cup press box during the Argentina-netherlands quarter-final on Friday.
The 48-year-old American had described feeling pressure in his chest in the days leading up to the game.
His wife Celine Gounder said an autopsy performed by the New York City Medical Examiner's Office concluded there was nothing untoward in his death.
"Grant died from the rupture of a slowly growing, undetected ascending aortic aneurysmwithhemopericardium," she said yesterday.
Arupturedaorticaneurysm is when a bulge or swelling in the main artery that carries blood away from your heart tears, stopping blood being pumped around the body.
"Thechestpressureheexperienced shortly before his death may have represented the initial symptoms, " added Gounder, who is herself a doctor.
"No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him. His death was unrelated to Covid. His death was unrelated to vaccination status.
"There was nothing nefarious about his death."
A security guard who suffered a serious fall at Lusail Stadium has died in hospital.
John Njau Kibue was injured on Saturday but after three days in intensive care, tournament organisers have announcedhedidnotsurvive his injuries.
“Stadium medical teams immediately attended the scene and provided emergency medical treatment before he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital’s intensive care unit by ambulance,” said a statement from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.
“We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of the medicalteam,hesadlypassed away in hospital on Tuesday. His next of kin have been informed.
“We send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time.
“Qatar’s tournament organisers are investigating the circumstancesleadingtothefall asamatterofurgencyandwill provide further information pending the outcome of the investigation. We will also ensure that his family receive all outstanding dues and monies owed.”
