A dramatic day which started so quietly

- Alan Young

It started as a quiet Sunday, always a sure sign something is about to happen.

The news, when it broke, arrived via a press release from Police Scotland and ensured today’s Scotsman looks very different to the one initially planned out.

The arrest of the former first minister, while it may have been expected by some, in the long-running SNP finance probe was still a dramatic event, the ramifications of which will play out in the days to follow. Ms Sturgeon was released without charge last night pending further inquiries.

Our Westminster correspondent Alexander Brown was on shift yesterday to pick through developments and you can read our coverage from pages 4 to 7 today. You may also assume we will be writing much more on this topic throughout the week in print and online at scotsman.com.

Until the news of Ms Sturgeon’s arrest came through, the big political story of the day was at Westminster where the fallout from Boris Johnson’s decision to dramatically quit as an MP was continuing. Rishi Sunak is now facing three by-elections and predictable demands from the opposition to call an immediate election. You can catch-up with all the latest on page 8 today. Again, a story to watch this week as the MPS’ inquiry into partygate, which prompted the former PM to go, is due to be released.

Outside of politics, dramatic images reached us from the Highlands where a huge wildfire came dangerously close to homes. Rural affairs correspondent Katharine Hay has the latest on page 7.
