Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland
The penultimate episode examines how the police and army attempted to infiltrate paramilitary organisations to gain intelligence during the 1980s, a time when violence seemed to be on the increase. Among those offering their insights is ‘Brian’, who worked for the Special Branch of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). He felt that key to preventing violence was gathering information from or about those involved, which meant recruiting informers. But for Anne Marie, then a republican teenager in Belfast, members of Special Branch were reviled, and witnessing a gun attack by loyalists drove her to take action.
