Well Educated teaches his rivals a lesson as he lands Kelso prize

- Gordon Brown

Well Educated, sent off at 100-30, continued his good form for George Bewley when landing Kelso’s feature race yesterday.

Ridden by the Appleby trainer’s son Jonathon, the Cumbrian raider saw off Jungle Jack by two and threequarter lengths in the Look Who’s 65 Elliot Henderson Handicap Hurdle.

“That’s his sixth win for us since we bought him out of a selling hurdle at Hexham two years ago,” Bewley senior said. “He’s won us over £53,000 so that’s around £40,000 profit, which isn’t a bad return at all.

“He’s not long come back in for the summer and that’s just his third run of the spring. He’s done well to defy the penalty for winning at Hexham the other night and the plan is to go back there in about three weeks’ time.”

Lucinda Russell completed a 54-1 double with Chapel Green and Somebody’s Fortune.

The pair were both ridden by Derek Fox as he clinched Scottish Racing’s top jump jockey in Scotland award, which ended on the Borders track’s final meeting of the spring.

The big Ladies Day crowd was brought to its feet as Geordies Dream took care of fast-finishing Ravenscraig Castle by half a length in the opening J A Wilson Contractors Novices’ Hurdle.

At Cartmel today, Irish Lullaby can strike in the Hadwins Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle for Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero.

The grey was formerly trained on the Flat by Jessica Harrington, contesting Listed and Group Three contests without winning but also without being disgraced.

Since changing hands and stables she has run twice over hurdles, finishing third on her debut at Market Rasen in March and then winning convincingly at Warwick next time out.

That five-and-a-half-length victory caught the eye and although it burdens her with a penalty now, she can shine again when slightly upped in trip at Cartmel.
