Son Sean delivers a golden birthday present for Bowen at Perth

- Peter Allison

Peter Bowen celebrated his 66th birthday in style by landing a fourth bet365 Perth Gold Cup with Statuario, ridden by son Sean.

The 7-2 chance outbattled top-weight Hang In There to land the £34,000 prize by a neck on the 25th year of the three-mile Scone feature.

Pembrokeshire-based Bowen, who now shares the licence with another of his sons Michael, said: “He really, really toughed it out well and he’s always better going righthanded than left-handed.

“That’s four wins from five visits to Perth now so he clearly loves the place, and it was a great ride from Sean. He’ll go for the Summer Plate at Market Rasen next month now.”

Sandy Thomson’s good recent run continued when Marty Mcfly gained a cosy success for jockey Ryan Mania in the bet365 Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle.

“We learned quite a bit about him on his first run for us last time and he’s done that nicely,” Thomson said.

Mongibello, ridden byJJ Slevin, got the verdict by a short head in the bet365 Novices’ Hurdle.

Trained in Northern Ireland by Stuart Crawford, it was a winning debut over timber for the well-supported 5-2 second favourite.

Meanwhile, Approval is one to watch in the Download The Racing App 43 Now Novice Stakes at Windsor today.

Well beaten on his only juvenile outing, the William Haggas-trained gelding suffered a neck defeat on his first spin in 2024, before again finding one too good in april. both of those starts were on the all-weather, so it will be interesting to see how he fares back on turf here.

Kiss Me My Love should be good enough to get a win on the board at the third attempt in Carlisle's Bet At Racingtv Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Charlie Johnston’s runner has finished second on each of her two starts so far, going down by a length and a half on debut to Up The Clarets before finding larch ill lass three and a quarter lengths too good.

On both occasions, she easily accounted for the rest of the field and given she is bred to relish a mile in due course, this try at six furlongs looks a smart move.
