Blackface gimmer record at £18,000

A new record price of £18,000 for a Blackface gimmer was achieved at Lanark, on Tuesday, when Hugh and Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseb­urn, sold a single to Paul Coulson, High Staward.

The gimmer, which is going back to Auldhouseb­urn to be flushed, is by the 30,000gns McCurdy lamb bought at Ballymena in 2020, and bred from a ewe by a £160,000 Elmscleugh lamb.

The father and son duo sold a second gimmer, by the £70,000 Harestone lamb and out of a ewe by an £85,000 Elmscleugh, for £4000 to David Lennox, Northern Ireland.

The sale of 4932 Blackface draft ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs forward in two sections – for scrapie monitored and non-scrapie monitored, saw ewes sell to £1800 for a pen from Messrs Blackwood, Dalblair, selling to Messrs Conway, Ireland.

Increased demand from Ireland saw ewe and gimmer averages up on the year, at £145.60 for 1759 (+£10) and 841 at £208.29 (+£17.50), respective­ly. The second sale of ewe lambs saw 1492 head level at £57.65 (-£3.50).

Outwith the sale of Blackface females, some 963 head of all classes of lowland ewes and gimmers sold to £300 for Texel gimmers from Messrs Brown, Muirhouse, and £230 for Texel ewes from the same home.

The sale of 47 tups was topped £1100 for a Texel shearling from Messrs Glasgow, Felton.
