Lleyn rams reach 6000gns

- By Kathryn Dick

AN abundance of shearling rams to suit commercial and purebred breeders forward for the Lleyn society’s sale, at Carlisle, ensured a solid trade throughout.

Terry Fort, of the Forts flock, at Keighley, had a cracking day amongst the rams taking the day’s top price of 6000gns for his No 2, Fort King.

Sired by Netherton Injector – which was purchased here in 2020 for 2500gns – he is out a home-bred ewe and headed home with Hamish Goldie, from Ruthwell.

Second top price was 5500gns paid for Peter Knowles’ Cragg Kano, from New Hutton, Kendal, which sold to Welsh breeders, Richard Twose, Maenhir, and

HM Wells. Third in the presale show, he is by a homebred son of Wraycastle sire and out of a home-bred ewe.

The Cursiter family’s Laga flock, from Orkney, sold next at 4500gns, to Hamish Goldie. He is by Brynowen Governor, a ram purchased here in 2018 for 4200gns that stood male champion at the Royal Welsh Show the same year.

Emrys and Dylan Jones’ Lluest flock, from Machynlleth, took 3500gns for a shearling ram from C and A Kennedy, Ballyclare. He is a son of Brightonhouse Gold Card, a ram purchased at Ross-on-Wye in 2018 for 2800gns that produced sons to 7000gns here in 2020.

Just behind, on 3000gns, Derek Steen’s shearling, Ballylinney Knight, from Coxhill, Moffat, by a Lluest ram, sold north to Laga Farms, Orkney.

Gimmers were topped at £230 per head twice – for the first prize pen of five from Hamish Goldie, which were knocked down to JA Wood and Sons, Shrewsbury, and for a pen of 12 from Lucinda Steen, Moffat, purchased by D Bell and Sons.

Close behind, on £220, the second prize pen from Ian and Tom Walling, Selkirk, were snapped up by L Scanlon, Biggar.

Three pens then realised £210, with the first from Lucinda Steen selling to JA Woods and Son, followed by another pen from Linda Jenkinson, Kirkby Stephen, purchased by WGL Soulsby and Sons, Penrith. The third pen at £210 was from JA and R Geldard and Sons, Kendal, and knocked down to RN Cranstoun and Son, Dumfries.

Linda Jenkinson also topped the ewe lamb section at £150, with her first prize pen which sold to Richard Twose, Twose Farms, Whitland.

This was followed at £135 for a pen of 10 from J Morton, Penrith, which sold to D and MA Wilson, Workington, with the same buyer forking out £130 for the third prize pen from WJ and DJ Williams, Pwllheli.

A small selection of twoyear-old ewes, saw Messrs Corcoran, Newton Stewart, reached £150 selling to S Watson, Workington.
