Penguin blacks hit 6600gns

-

SOME 40 years of dedicated Aberdeen-Angus breeding came to an end at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, when Robert Lane dispersed the Penguin herd, from Newport, last weekend.

The sale, which attracted a top price of 6600gns and a further four sales at or above the 5000gns mark, was led by the two-year-old heifer, Blelack Blackbird W034, purchased at last year’s Blelack dispersal. April 2020-born, this Tonley Jester Eric daughter sold with her May-born heifer calf at foot by Galcantray Jedi Eric and served to Penguin Roland. Messrs Kennedy, Borris, Carlow, Eire, were the final bidders on youngster bred from Blelack Blackbird R636, by Warrenho Emperor.

The first lot in the catalogue got the sale off to a good start when selling for 5400gns to Messrs Temperton, Ilam, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Attracting this money was the six-year-old cow, Penguin Tidy Bee S614, a daughter of Penguin Superior, a son of the American sire, Sydgen.

She is out of previous home-bred Tidy Bee by Haymount Wurz and sold with her fourth calf, a Mayborn heifer by Penguin Roland and served back to the same bull.

Just behind, on 5300gns, Messrs Reynolds, Spring Gardens, Whitland, bought the six-month-old heifer calf, Penguin Whitney Y683, a daughter of Penguin Superior, another son of Sydgen, out of a previous Whitney by Cardona Potter.

Two lots sold for 5000gns with the first being another Tidy Bee cow and calf outfit purchased by Marsdens Farms, Penistone, Sheffield. For their money they get Penguin Tidy Bee U703, a four-year-old by Penguin Superior, bred from another Tidy Bee by the American import G13 Steel. She sold with her July-born heifer calf at foot by Roland and served again to the same sire.

Travelling home to Marsdens Farms on the same lorry load at 4200gns was the five-year-old cow, Penguin Annie T674, another by Superior, which sold due to Penguin Roland.

The second 5000gns lot sold up to Orkney with Messrs Slater, Orphir. This was the rising two-year-old bull, Penguin Lord X810, an ET bred from Schivas Lady, a Blelack Evril daughter bought at the Cheerbrook dispersal for 10,000gns, and sired by the American bull, HF Alcatraz.

The 27-month-old in-calf heifer, Penguin Annie W806 made 4700gns selling to Messrs Webster, Scarisbrick, Lancaster. A Superior-sired entry, bred from a previous Annie by Cardona Potter, she changed hands served to Penguin Lord.

Another two lots made 4200gns, with the first, Penguin Evora W773, bred from Blelack Evora P394 and sired by Blelack Estimator, selling down to Northwich with Messrs Tunney, Cuddington. Included in this transaction was her Penguin Jock-sired heifer calf.

Matching that sale was the 17-month-old bull, Penguin Gaffer X842, an ET bred from Canadian genetics being bred from Arda Gammer 74E and sired by DMM Glock 94E. The buyers were Messrs Lane, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Lockerbie.
