Tasty Pie tops at 3400gns

DESPITE some exceptiona­l milking females with pedigrees to match, a subdued atmosphere saw averages slip on the month at the September Border and Lakeland Holstein sale at Carlisle, where prices peaked at 3400gns.

Some 10 females sold for £3000 or more with the sale leader being Mark Walton’s Bankview Aladdin Pie, from Rookby, Kirkby Stephen. This fresh heifer by RDG Aladdin-Red, is bred from 12 generation­s of Ex or VG dams from the Golden Oaks Mark Prudence cow family and sold to Messrs Roper, Longridge, Preston, who bought several of the top priced lots.

Next on his list at 3100gns and 3000gns were two from Skirwith Hall Farms. Stowbeck Alligator Hilary, a July-calved heifer out of the Ex90 SP LP60 cow, Stowbeck Brawler Hilary, made 3100gns and Stowbeck Lighthouse Lena, an Augustcalv­ed heifer bred from Stowbeck Sammy Lena Ex913E SP LP50, made 3000gns.

Second top price was 3200gns paid for Peter Kemp’s Wyevalley Crushtime Sky Rae, from Kingswell, Aberdeen. Another Augustcalv­ed heifer this time bred from Paydon Maestro Skylerae VG85(3yr) SP LP50 which goes back to the Ex96 Hanoverhil­l Tony Rae, she was knocked down to Messrs Oldfield, Gisburn, Clitheroe.

The same buyers also went to 3100gns for the April, 2020-born heifer, Grayridge Awesome Bridget, which was due just before the sale, from Jim and David Gray, East Kilbride. She is bred from the Ex91 SP Rockset Cardinals Bridget 2 Ex91 SP.

Selling up to Muir of Ord, Ross-shire with Messrs Mackenzie at 3100gns was Greengrass Jordy Delited VG85-2yr, from GJ Mutton and Sons and T Winder, Billincote, Barrow in Furness. She calved at the end of July and is bred from seven generation­s of VG or Exclassifi­ed dams.

Top price for H Wright and Son’s Berryholme herd from Kendal, was 3000gns paid by Messrs Hodge and Co, Tarbolton, Ayr, for Berryholme Applicable Lasenza 2, an August-calved heifer also bred from seven generation­s of top rated dams.

The champion, as selected by the judge, Andrew Wilson, Carskerdo, Fife, was the winning junior heifer, Espland Apps Alison 2 from Alan Cannon, Appleby. She is by Lindenrigh­t Apps and made 2700gns, again to Mr Roper.
