British Blues lead multibreed­s at Carlisle

KNOCKAGH Perky, the British Blue female champion, attracted the lead price of 5200gns at a multi-breed sale of pedigree beef cattle, at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, last week.

Sale leader was an August 2020-born heifer from Northern Ireland breeders, Jim and Laura Ervine, Knockagh Road, Newtown Abbey. Maternal sister to Knockagh Rihanna, the junior champion at Balmoral Show in May, Perky is bred from Knockagh Lass and sired by Empire D’Ochain. She sold to Ross and Elaine Pattinson, Brampton, Cumbria.

Almeley Pichon led the bull trade at 5000gns for Graham Morgan, The Cider mill, Tillington. His two-year-old British Blue, purchased by Messrs Baillie, Kirkcowan, Newton Stewart, stood reserve champion in the pre-sale show and is by Pinnacle Hero, out of Almeley Lizzy, a Drybarrows Cawdale daughter.

Top price from Blair and Shona Comrie, Stonebyres, Lanark, was 4000gns paid for Stonebyres Ramona. Fifth in her class, this 18-month-old heifer is backed by home-bred genetics being sired by Stonebyres Ninja and bred from Stonebyres Jill. Final bidders were Messrs Barrow, Mealsgate, Wigton.

Leading the Blondes at 3000gns was the rising two-year-old bull, Newland Sarov, from Thor Atkinson, Newland, Ulverston. He is by Castleview Mastermind out of Banks Geranium, and sold to Messrs Lamb and Sons, Seahouses, Northumber­land.

Top priced Aberdeen-Angus at 2600gns was the January 2021-born bull, Mosston Muir Imperial from Richard Gratton, Greenacres, Malton Road, Kirby Misperton. Bred at Mosston Muir, he is a son of Ballindall­och Pistyll, out of Mosston Muir INA and headed home to North Yorkshire with Leas Farm Ltd, Pickering.

The draft sale from W Richardson’s Laverock Charolais herd from Laverock Bridge, Kendal, secured the top price of 2200gns for the white breed.

This five-year-old unregister­ed cow with her April-born heifer calf was a purchased by Messrs Sweeting, Ulverston, Cumbria.

Lincoln Reds sold to 2200gns twice – for a bull from J Quinn and S Oliver, Axholme, Scunthorpe, and a heifer from MR Cooper, Haxey, Doncaster, both of which were purchased by Messrs Bark, Biggar.
