GEORGE and John Browell, of the Quarry flock from Hexham, had a field day for their first time selling crossing-type Bluefaced Leicester lambs at Carlisle, achieving a new high of £12,000.

The brothers, along with John’s two sons, Ridley and Lewis Browell, topped the sale with a March-born ram lamb by last year’s £5500 Carlisle purchase, Dawyck P20, out of a home-bred dam by Carry House H10. He sold in a three-way split to the Reed family of the West Biggins flock, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham; Andrew Hunter, The Steel, Bellingham; and Martyn Archer, Carry House, Wark, Hexham.

It was another family team behind the sale leaders from Dawyck who sold seven to average £3314. The Thornborrow family – Malcolm and sons, Craig and Gary, and Gary’s partner, Marian Porter – Easter Dawyck, Stobo, Peebles, saw their pen leader make £10,000 to Finlay Robertson, of the Beeches flock from West Calder. This lamb is by Smearsett M2, which was bought at Hawes for £7000 and has previously bred to £4000, whilst the dam, goes back to Hewgill M1.

The third lamb, a son of the £65,000 Riddings ram bought last year which bred sons to £17,000 and £16,000 at Hawes, this year, made £7000, to W Lockhart and Son, Laggan Park, Moniaive and Hugh Rorison, Clonrae, both Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.

Dawyck then teamed up with Kevin Ridley of the Shitlington flock, Hexham, and Shaun Proctor, Kirkby Stephen, to buy the £8000 Steel shearling from Andrew Hunter, The Steel. He is from the first crop of shearling sons by the £8500 Hawes purchase, Spurrigg P2 – the sire of the £30,000 Steel Bruno lamb sold privately this year.

The same home sold another for £5500 to JRF Pattinson and Son, Hott Bank, Bardon Mill, Hexham. He is by the £3000 Nunscleugh

SALE LEADER at £12,000 from Quarry House

The Lords’ Hewgill flock from Stainmore, Kirkby Stephen, sold to £7500 for their No 2, purchased by James Mills, Larne, Co Antrim. Backed by homebred genetics, he is the result of the Hewgill M39 sire onto a Riddings L7 sired-ewe.

The same home sold the pre-sale champion, a lamb, for £6000 in a three-way split to Hexham breeders, The Steel, Carry House and Shitlington. His pedigree features the £5500 Marriforth P1 sire bought last year onto a homebred ewe.

Despite being first in the ring, Martyn Archer’s Carry House flock, reached £5000 for a ram lamb son of Carry House Ronaldo – a tup sold last year for £28,000 with a share being retained – out of a home-bred dam by Carry House Jackpot. He sold in a three-way split to Hexhambased breeders, Wanwood Partners; Messrs Murray and Sons and Messrs Morshead.

Selling at the same money was the sole entry from John Smith-Jackson, Shafthill, High Town, Haltwhistle. His lamb is by frozen semen from the Smearsett E1, bought from a fundraiser for the late Hannah Brown. The dam is by the Blarnavaid L10.

Second prize in the presale show, he sold to the Browells, Quarry House, with Messrs Burrow and Rutter Armstrong, Penrith, taking an equal share.

Another to hit £5000 was the best from the Lee family, Agars Hill, Whitfield, Hexham. This lamb is a result of the Midlock L32 sire onto a Shafthill J27 ewe and found a new home with Messrs Lodge, Settle.

The best from father and son duo, John and Callum Park of the Forebrae flock, Dalpeddar, Sanquhar, made £5000 when selling to Messrs Elliott, Powburn, Alnwick; Messrs Dixon, Morpeth; and Messrs Burston, Holystone, Morpeth.
