TRADE was nothing short of spectacular amongst the Aberdeen-Angus females, with the inclusion of a complete draft sale of the 2021-born heifers from the Earlston-based herd, Gordon enterprise, as well as two reduction sales from Rulesmains and Retties.

The Gordon’s herd enjoyed the best of the female trade with their lead heifer, Gordon Pole Star X695, landing the top price of 40,000gns – setting a new breed female record when selling to Ken Hodge’s Greenarch herd in Cheshire. Junior breed champion at the Great Yorkshire on her sole previous outing, this 17-month-old is out of Belhaven Pole Star and sired by the legendary Netherallan Peter Pershore – which have both bred full siblings to 17,000gns in the form of LG President and the 22,000gns LG Powerhouse.

Next best at 15,000gns was the similarly-aged Gordon Black Cherry

Her pedigree features Rawburn Luthor onto Linton Gilbertines Black Cherry. She also sold scanned in calf to Rawburn Jose Eric.

Richard and Carol Rettie’s consignment from their Methven-based herd, Perth, peaked at 7500gns for the May 2021-born heifer, Retties Frances, purchased by A Hall, Co Antrim, who gets for his money a daughter of Billinge Magic Jack Eric, out of Balhaven Figure of Speech.

The April 2021-born Rulesmains Kelly, led Andrew and Emma Hodge’s production sale when attracting a top bid of 6000gns. Second in her class at the Royal Highland, she is by Blelack Lord Heartford and out of Rulesmains Kelly which is a full sister to the 16,000gns Liley Kinannie. A busy ringside of buyers ensured what was to be an electric trade for Simmental breeders, where no fewer than 10 bulls sold at fivefigure prices and a new breed record average of £7558 for 45 bulls was achieved – up £1597 on the corresponding year, albeit for 12 fewer sold.

Clearance rates were a respectable 61% which was on a par with the remaining breeds.

It another day to remember for Stewart Stronach and family’s 160 pedigree cow Islavale herd from Berryleys, Grange, Keith, it not only secured the day’s highest price of 28,000gns, but also went on to sell seven bulls – five of which sold for 10,000gns and above – to level at £13,500.

Their sale leader was Islavale Magnum, a second prize winner from the presale show and an AI son of the 11,000gns Team Celtic out of the Ex90-classified Islavale Harper which stood senior champion at Stars of the Future Calf Show and goes back to the 15,000gns Atlow Dixon. Magnum sold up to Delfur Farms for pedigree and commercial use in the herd based at Aberlour, Banffshire.

Team Stronach also got 18,000gns for their presale junior champion, Islavale Mint. A son of the current stock bull, Corskie Highlander, an Ex92classified bull by the Ex93 Dirnanean Bradley, he is out of Islavale Amber and was knocked down to Hugh Brunton, buying for the Crudie herd from Arbroath.

The Stewarts’ Balglass herd, based at Lennoxtown, Glasgow, forked out 13,000gns for the March, 2021-born Islavale Matrix. Another by Corskie Highlander, this lad is out of Islavale Bramble.

Two Islavale bulls achieved 10,000gns, with the first being the March, 2021-born Islavale Mojo. An AI son of Curaheen Giant – a bull that has bred former Stirling Bull Sales champions – out of Islavale Britney Ex94. Full brother to Islavale Kai which sold here in October,
