SCOTLAND’S pork industry has been celebrated in a monthlong focus with QMS SUPPORTING Scottish Craft Butchers’ Porktober campaign, to promote the economic and nutritional value of Specially Selected Pork to consumers.
A series of QMS activity, from a new online show to a Tasty Little Pork Week in schools, has spotlighted chops, fillet and ribs as well as the staples of sausages and bacon to illustrate pork’s different cuts, taste and versatility.
QMS Director of Marketing and Communications, Lesley Cameron, said “Pork is a diverse red meat and key cuts are exceptionally healthy, but our challenge is to make sure it’s Specially Selected Pork that consumers are choosing when they shop and viewing it as a great alternative to chicken. Our activity throughout the month has been designed to reach different age and consumer groups to send a strong message about the value of buying Specially Selected Pork on every level – quality, welfare and to support the industry in Scotland. The campaign has particuar imporance at this time where Scotlands pig producers are still dealing with the devestating impact of Covid-19, EU Exit and the impact of the war in Ukraine on their supply chains and input costs.
The focus has been inspiring consumers to experiment cooking with different cuts of pork using familiar world-cuisine recipes, traditionally made with chicken, that don’t need to be expensive.
Social media influencers Dinner by Dan and Rona McMillan have created new recipes, including a Spanish Specially Selected Pork Paella, Specially Selected Pork Ramen and Specially Selected Pork Chilli Con Carne Soup, which are being promoted across social media this Autumn. A feature encouraging a swap to Specially Selected Pork is also set to run in the 28th October edition of Take a Break Magazine with a UK circulation of 380K.
As a parody of The Great British Bake Off, QMS is excited to launch a new three-part online feature, the Make It Scotch Cook Off, which goes live on 25th October. Contestants will be competing with dishes featuring Specially Selected Pork, Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb. Presented by social media influencers Wallace Currie of Rural2Kitchen and long-standing QMS collaborative partner Just Jess, it will also feature popular Tik Tok influencer Whatshername who has 2.3million followers on the popular platform.
Pork recipes will continue to be promoted through the current popular Meat in the Middle advertising campaign, which illustrates how Specially Selected Pork can substitute chicken or be mixed with pulses and vegetables to give great nutritional credentials. Just Jess is sharing a recipe she has created to tap into the popular trend for spiced pumpkin latte – Specially Selected Pork Meatball & Pumpkin Spice Ricotta Risotto
This activity follows the first in a new initiative from the Health and Education team, Tasty Little Weeks, to inspire secondary school children to eat and cook red meat, with it kicking off with Tasty Little Pork Week. Over 300 secondary schools in Scotland have received QMS Meat Vouchers for the 2022-23 academic year which can be exchanged at local butchers for meat to use in Home Economics classes.
A number of resources have been designed to support teachers in discussing topics such as farming in Scotland, food production, NPD, Nutrition and Cooking with Pork. All of these resources are linked to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence to ensure they are both relevant and easy to integrate into the classroom.
Kate Rowell, Chair of QMS added:
“We’re calling industry to support this and future campaigns to inspire consumers to select Specially Selected Pork when they are shopping and support pork production in Scotland. Through all of QMS’ social media channels, consumers are being continuously encouraged to Make It with Specially Selected Pork through quick and affordable meal inspiration as well as pointing to the recipe section of The Make It Scotch website. Please share our videos and recipes or create your own tagging #MakeItScotch. Coming from the real people in the industry has huge impact and creates positive association.”
