Grand turnout for South-west Dairy Show

DAVID Wright from Berryholme Holsteins, Kendal, was put through his paces when being asked to judge at the South-west Scotland Dairy Show.

Starting with the youngsters, the junior young handlers was won by six-year-old, Isla Davidson from Halmyre, Haugh of Urr, leading her Ayrshire calf, Halmyre Urr Scorpio 9. Standing top of the line in the senior handlers was Katlyn McCormick, Dumfries, with Ceeingred Jordy Atlee.

In the calf championsh­ip, Hattie Hassall led the Yates family’s Holstein calf, Logan Latenite Shania Red, to win top honours. Sired by Avant Garde-I Latenite, her dam is Milksource Shania Red EX922E.

This December, 2021-born calf stood second place in the December and January class at the Scottish Calf Show, as well as first place junior Red and White class. She then went on to be third in the junior Red and White at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show at Peterborou­gh.

Reserve champion was the Ayrshire calf, Parkhead Brenda, from Tom Baynes. This February, 2022-born youngster is a Cuthill Towers Bandit daughter and bred by Kev Tinker.

Winning the senior Ayrshire title was a third calved Ayrshire cow from WP Callander, Crofthead, Crocketfor­d. Fresh in July and giving 33kg a day, this Rockstar daughter stood reserve champion at the show last year.

Reserve Ayrshire, from Northumber­land exhibitor, Richard Baynes, was his heifer in milk, Marleycote Sea Lily 32, owned in partnershi­p with Adam Smith. Sired by Troutbeck Skyfall and backed by six generation­s of VG or Ex dams, she stood honourable mention at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show 2021 and was first place in-calf heifer at the Great Yorkshire Show 2022.

Claiming the Jersey championsh­ip on her debut was Logan Chrome Caribbean, from the Yates family and Gary Jones. This heifer in milk, by River Valley Cece Chrome, is out of Arethusa Veronica Comet EX95.

Taking reserve Jersey was Tintoview Tequila Blondie Ex94 from the Buchanan family. This fifth lactation Tower Vue Tequilla daughter calved in July and is giving 32 litres. She was champion Jersey at the SWS Dairy Show 2021 and reserve at AgriScot 2019.

Brian and Craig Davidson cleaned up in the Holstein ring taking both champion and reserve titles with daughters of their homebred bull, Errolston Gauntlet. Their champion, Errolston Gauntlet I Ricki is the 11th generation VG or Ex, fresh at the end of July and giving 53kg a day, she was on her first show outing.

Reserve was Errolston Gauntlet Destina, a second lactation cow that calved in August and is giving 51kg a day. She stood first place second calver at Moffat Show.

South-west Scotland Dairy Show chairman, Tony Scott and secretary, Katie Davidson presented a cheque for £496.30, the proceeds of the previous two show’s raffle, to Laurie Irving, from Nith Inshore Rescue.
