Wester Bonhard and YFs on form at UA Stirling

ON Monday, United Auctions’ Stirling centre, sold 781 store cattle at their annual Perth show and sale where 445 bullocks and 335 heifers averaged 311.36p per kg and 309.46p respective­ly.

Limousin crosses from Wester Bonhard topped three of the four sections, with heifers weighing 474kg and 547kg making 390.3p and £1950 respective­ly.

The same home sold 404kg bullocks to 366.3p.

Bullocks reached £1960 for a 648kg Limousin cross from Meadows of Ballied.

Hugh Dunlop, Holehouse, produced the champion and reserve winners at the presale show which went on to sell for £1700 and £1780, respective­ly.

Perthshire District and Fife and Kinross Young Farmers’ calf wintering competitio­n was also staged alongside Lothian and Peebles Young Farmers, which ran from September through to April.

Champion among Perthshire and Fife and Kinross was a Februarybo­rn British Blue haltered 464kg bullock from Ben Macdonald, Meadows of Ballied, Bankfoot. Purchased in November and bred at Kinnesswoo­d, it later realised £1760.

Reserve was an Octoberbor­n 542kg Charolais cross heifer from Alex McKenzie, South Lodge, Aberfeldy JAC. Bred at King Arms, it made £1700.

Heifers sold to £2070 and 396.55p from Jessie and Ruby MacDougall, Wester Rottearns.

Taking the best return on capital invested for Perthshire and Fife and Kinross was Ishbel Taylor, Dall (Aberfeldy JAC) with an April-born Charolais cross bullock bred at Garaphail Farm. It was bought for

£790 and sold £1520 gaining a 92% profit.

Eve Cuthbertso­n, Balcanquha­l, Kinross, secured the top daily live weight gain with a Marchborn Charolais cross bullock bred at White Sykes. It reached a daily live weight gain of 1.45kg, scale 588kg and sold for £1720.

Among Lothian and Peebles Young Farmers, Euan Pettigrew, Faskine, Bathgate JAC, did the double securing both the champion and reserve honours.

His best was a Januarybor­n 566kg Limousin cross bullock purchased in October. It was bred

at Greenwells Farm and made £1820. Reserve was a January-born Limousin cross 548kg heifer, bred by Newhouse of Glamis, that later sold for £1740.

Taking overall best return on capital invested for Lothian and Peebles was Alexander Cook, Kinneil Mill, Linlithgow with an April-born Limousin cross bullock bred at East Mill Farm.

It was bought for £860 and sold for £1670 gaining a profit of 94%. The same beast topped the daily live weight gain achieving 1.45kg.
