Politician­s from all parties, take note of what happened at the Olympics. Not on the track or on the water or even in the velodrome, but in the stands. Spectators were waving the Union Jack and singing the National Anthem – in their thousands. The Olympics gave us, the great British Public, a rare chance to show pride in our country, our islands, our nation, and celebrate who we are without being accused of being insular and out of touch with the modern world. Our fantastic athletes gave us something to be proud of because they were British. Rod Walker, Cheltenham,

Gloucester­shire I was sceptical about our ability to stage a successful Games. I had visions of half-built facilities and vocal support, chanting ‘Team GB!’ This indicates that being British and living in Great Britain is something of which to be proud. Let us hope that English people will not now use the word ‘England’ when they mean ‘Britain’ nor ‘English’ when they mean ‘British’, and so maintain the spirit of the London Games. We are aged between 67 and 75 and have nothing but praise for all those who contribute­d to such a magnificen­t event. Youngsters gave up their seats for us on the Tubes and the operation to get us in and out of Olympic Park was flawless. The army of volunteers and the military were all warm, friendly, smiling and patient. Proud to be British is what we all felt and what a wonderful advertisem­ent they all were for our country.
