Goal hero promises to deliver the goods

- By Gary Keown

GOAL hero Jamie Murphy insists he is ready to deliver on manager Stuart McCall’s plea for Motherwell to show some cutting edge in the European arena against Levante.

McCall wants his side to produce goals in the Europa League qualifying play-off against the Spaniards after losing to Panathinaikos when going out 5-0 on aggregate in the Champions League preliminaries.

Murphy believes the team can create a surprise in Lanarkshire on Thursday, saying: ‘Against Panathinaikos at home, we were probably the better team.

‘I know it is the same old story of a Scottish team playing well and the other side going through — but it is up to us to try to change that.

‘I played in front of the midfield today and got a couple, but the strikers go through all the shooting drills in training on a Friday and that has been working well. I am sure you will

NO DEFENCE: see our strikers scoring soon. Scoring goals is my job and the aim now is go on from here and keep winning.’

McCall, who admits he knows little about Levante, may be without central defender Simon Ramsden for the Europa tie after he hobbled off with a hamstring injury yesterday.

‘If you asked me about Levante right now, I wouldn’t know anything apart from the fact they play in Spain,’ said McCall.

His assistant Kenny Black was due to watch the Spaniards play Atletico Madrid today.

‘We are underdogs again, but I’d settle for the performance we put in against Panathinaikos in the home game,’ said McCall.

‘That was my first victory over Kilmarnock as a manager and I am pleased to get the monkey off my back.’

Kilmarnock boss Kenny Shiels was unhappy with the way his side conceded the goals against Motherwell.

‘Their forwards were better than ours, but they still had to depend on us for their goals. It was poor play for the first goal and their player wasn’t tracked for the second,’ he said.
