KENT club Sundridge Park, winners in 2008, are back in the UK Finals of The Mail on Sunday Classic for the third time in five years, after a 3½-1½ eighth-round win over Sweetwoods Park.
Sundridge captain Sandra Nadin said: ‘In our experience, year on year, teams are taking The Mail on Sunday even more seriously, so we are thrilled to be in the UK Finals again.
‘All our last three matches were extremely tight, especially having away fixtures in the previous two rounds against Lamberhurst and Royal Wimbledon. All three games could have gone either way. Our supporters have been treated to some really thrilling finishes this year.’
The team have been strengthened by the return of Kent regular Kim Morris, who played in the 2008 winning side but was missing last year because of county commitments. She was the one who sank the crucial putt at Lamberhurst on the second hole of sudden death to take the team through to the seventh round.
In 2008, Sundridge Park became champions when they beat THE Mail on Sunday Classic is the biggest golf club team competition in the world and, this year, it is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Each year around 25,000 golfers, in as many as 3,000 teams, take part.
Among those who have played in the championship are European Tour star Ross Fisher and Becky Brewerton, from the European Ladies’ Tour.
The finals once again are to be held at the spectacular El Rompido resort North Course in Andalucia, Spain, from Nov 19-21.
WINNING SMILES: Sunningdale in the Grand Finals at El Rompido but they lost last year in the UK Finals to Northamptonshire County at Marriott Worsley Park.
Nadin said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled that we are going back to Worsley Park but we are taking nothing for granted.
