Health bosses order 84,000 condoms for the sport stars heading to Glasgow 2014

GLASGOW 2014 could be the raunchiest Commonwealth Games ever after organisers ordered 84,000 condoms. The contraceptives are being provided for the 6,700 competitors and officials staying at the Athletes Village during the two-week Games – around 13 each.

By comparison, only 7,680 condoms were provided at the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi. One insider said: ‘It looks like some of the best “performances” may not be restricted to the stadium. Big sporting events are notorious for the sexual shenanigans, but it looks like Glasgow will top the lot.

‘At the rate of 13 each, I doubt if some of them will have the strength to compete in the Games – they will be worn out.’

The order, which cost £3,000 of Scottish Government cash, has been placed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, which has responsibility for the city’s sexual health.

Competitors from 71 countries will live together at the Athletes Village at Dalmarnock in Glasgow’s East End.

The health board says it has been working with Games organisers, who together decided the ‘appropriate’ number of condoms to be delivered directly to the village.

Organisers will hope there is no repeat of the plumbing problems that beset the games in Delhi – so many used condoms were flushed down the toilet that the drains became blocked.

Two years ago the London Olympics set the sexual benchmark for big Games, with 150,000 condoms distributed to 10,500 competitors.

American women’s football goalie Hope Solo said at the time: ‘There’s a lot of sex going on at the Olympics. I’ve seen people having sex in the open, getting down and dirty on grass between buildings.’

A book by some anonymous athletes laid bare the naughty goings-on behind the scenes. They wrote: ‘No matter what your type, the Olympic Village can cater to it, providing the best physical examples on earth.

‘Having completed competition, the athletes need to do something else to burn off their boundless energy.

‘Like thoroughbred horses which haven’t had a run for a while, they get frisky.’

An NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde spokesman said: ‘The condoms are for the whole Games family – and not just the athletes.’
