Living it up on Millionaires’ Row – for just £250

- By Frank Barrett

A TOP-of-the-range new London apartment in the most picturesque part of the city, overlooking the Thames (the Tower of London fills one of my picture windows, Tower Bridge another), would cost upwards from £3million. (The penthouse apartment in the new development on the opposite side of the river, for example, is on the market at £15million.)

How much, therefore, will it cost to spend a night in an apartment in this particular millionaires’ row – given that a modest room in a good London hotel costs from about £400 a night?

Amazingly, serviced apartments at the remarkably plush Cheval Three Quays, which opened two months ago, cost from around £250 per night, allowing visitors to live like a millionaire but at surprisingly modest prices.

The deal is even more attractive because the apartments offer fully equipped kitchens allowing you to provide all your own meals – and with a Tesco five minutes’ walk along the river, you don’t even need to worry about paying inflated prices for food.

The entrance to the Cheval Three Quays is less than 50 paces from the ticket office for the Tower of London. Also, outside you can catch Thames river cruises.

But if you have a river view – which will probably cost extra – you may find it difficult to summon up the energy to venture out at all. I was happy to sit myself at the window and gaze out at the Tower and Tower Bridge in one direction or across to the Shard in the other. Serviced apartments are a particularly good choice for longer stays – and for discovering less

/ well-known parts of the capital.

Another of my favourite places is the Sloane Club in Chelsea, which began life as the Service Women’s Club, founded for serving and former lady officers of the Armed Forces in the Second World War. This again provides ultra-elegant and comfortable accommodation, and very friendly and efficient service, in one of London’s most desirable residential areas. Handily located for the likes of the Natural History and Victoria and Albert museums, you can also windowshop at the most expensive boutiques and press your nose up against the front doors of the city’s most chic bars and restaurants.

Live like a prince but at an affordable price.
