Unbeaten... but disappoint­ed

THE 1974 tournament saw the first appearance of the new World Cup, left, after the previous Jules Rimet Trophy was awarded permanentl­y to the Brazilians following their third win in 1970. West Germany won the new trophy by beating Holland 2-1 in the final.

But the hosts’ 1-0 defeat to Cold War rivals East Germany in the group stage meant Scotland were the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
