Lord Bragg, 74, said he was dismayed by last week’s report in The Mail on Sunday that the BBC had, to avoid giving offence, cut the word ‘girl’ from a report about a female judo champion. Lord Bragg, who presents Radio 4’s In Our Time, said: ‘I couldn’t believe it. I thought, where are we going with this? This sort of reaction can turn into a form of authoritarianism where people are too scared to say anything.’
