Things to do this week
Cool down greenhouses by splashing the floor with cold water in the morning.
Trim deutzia and other flowering shrubs when blooms fade.
Watch out for caterpillar-like sawfly larvae on gooseberries and currants. Control with a pesticide containing pyrethrum.
Plant out tender summer flowers nurtured indoors since last autumn – cannas, gladioli and dahlias like a sunny spot with well drained soil.
Tidy up evergreen ornamental grasses. Comb your hand from bottom to top through those with soft foliage to remove dead growth. Wear gloves if there are sharp edges.
