WEATHER WATCH

- John Kettley

After last week’s disappointment the week ahead, although mostly dry, will have a distinct chill, with winds continuing to feed in from the north.

The downward spiral came in on the back of ex-hurricane Bertha. Fair Isle took in a huge 5.2in (132mm) of rain in 24 hours last weekend, while Lossiemouth on the Moray coast clocked 3.9in (100mm) between Sunday and Monday. Further south, Normanby Hall in Humberside produced England’s highest 24-hour rainfall of the period, with just over 2in (50mm).

Lows of 3C at Aboyne last Sunday and Cairngorm on Wednesday (low enough for a touch of ground frost) stamped the mark on an unseasonably cool week. And we won’t be warming up anytime soon. However, summer hasn’t finished yet and the end of August and early September should see the weather revert to type.
