Hard rockers are backing real ale... as long as bars don’t play music so loud

-

REAL ALE has never been so popular – and now the music industry is getting in on the act.

Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson wowed the Great British Beer Festival crowd last week when he called for an end to ‘pubs where the music is too loud, all the furniture has been taken out and it’s just full of kids drinking shots of vodka and Red Bull’.

His love of beer led to Iron Maiden’s collaboration with Stockport brewer Robinsons to create Trooper ale, named after one of the band’s songs and which now sells 5.5 million pints a year.

Meanwhile, Status Quo and Elbow have both produced ales with Wolverhampton brewer Marston’s.

Status Quo’s is named Piledriver. Marston’s boss Ralph Findlay said: ‘Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt came into the brewery and really knew their stuff when it came to hops and barley.’

Elbow’s is a pale ale called Charge.

Marston’s Hobgoblin is the official ale at more than 30 music festivals this summer.

The baton has also been passed down to the next generation of musicians. Beavertown brewery in Hackney, East London, is run by Logan Plant, son of Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant.
