Hughes will be happy to pip McCall’s men

-

JOHN HUGHES praised his table toppers after a convincing defeat of Motherwell — then claimed he will be delighted if Inverness manage to finish above Stuart McCall’s side this season.

The 2013/14 runners-up were a shadow of the team that racked up 70 points last year, but Hughes insisted: ‘Motherwell will be there or thereabouts.

‘They had four big players out but were the better team in the second half. If we finish above them, we will be doing well.

‘We were slick. Our ball retention was good and we had total domination in the first half.

‘We got our wee break before half-time and that settled us. It took us until the last minute to get the second, but we are happy.’

McCall labelled his team’s display as one of the poorest of his time in charge.

‘We were rotten and they were very good,’ he said. ‘Even the basic stuff, we couldn’t do.

‘We’ve got a lot of hard work to do. We were really poor in all departments. John Sutton had nothing to feed off up front and we’ve not created anything.’
