Captain targets Scots cap milestone at Euros

-

SCOTT BROWN admits he would love to captain Scotland at Euro 2016 — and earn a place in the SFA’s Hall of Fame in the process.

The 29-year-old (left) has represented his country 42 times and, even if he played in each of the seven Scotland fixtures scheduled for 2015, he would go into next year one short of the 50-cap milestone.

The priority remains qualification from a difficult section featuring world champions Germany, Poland and the Republic of Ireland, but Brown admits his dream scenario would see him hit the half century at the very moment Scotland participated in a major tournament for the first time since 1998.

‘It would be lovely if my 50th cap came at the Euros,’ he said. ‘That would be amazing. I want to get 50 and I don’t see why I can’t get even more. I feel fit enough.

‘It would be a special moment for me but what would mean an awful lot more would be getting Scotland to the Euros.’

Brown made his Scotland debut when he replaced his old Hibs team-mate Garry O’Connor during a friendly against the USA at Hampden in 2007, shortly before his transfer to Celtic.

He has been at the heart of the Gordon Strachan’s plan since he took over from Craig Levein two years ago.

Brown said: ‘We’ve kicked on since Gordon has come in. Hopefully, we can qualify.’
