STEPHEN FRY last night revealed he had married his partner Elliott Spencer – just 11 days after the couple announced their engagement.

The writer and broadcaster broke the news to his eight million Twitter followers and posted a picture of the couple signing the civil register in Dereham, Norfolk.

The QI presenter, 57, tweeted this caption with the photo: ‘Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing.’

Fry’s former comedy partner Hugh Laurie tweeted his congratulations: ‘It’s happened! @ElliottGSpencer has made an honest man of m’col. Love and happiness to all!!’

Illusionist Derren Brown posted the simple message: ‘Gor. Geous xxxx’ while Coronation Street star Charlie Condou wrote: ‘Hurrah! Wonderful news x.’

Fry, who began his romance with Elliott last year, wore a grey suit with a multi-coloured tie for the ceremony.

Mr Spencer, a stand-up comedian who is 30 years Fry’s junior, opted for a black outfit with a blue tie. Both men wore yellow carnations.

The couple gave notice to marry at the registry office in Dereham on December 23 and then announced their engagement on January 6.

They had previously said they had hoped to keep the ceremony private.

Fry has spoken of his struggles with depression in the past but friends say the relationship with Spencer has put a new spring in his step.

One friend said: ‘Elliott seems to have given him the confidence to live his life again. It’s great to have the old Stephen back.’
