The fairy tale’s over for Aitken and her warrior
...as her father insists they never really married in the first place
IT ALWAYS seemed an unconventional union, and I am sorry to report that the marriage of former It Girl Alexandra Aitken and her Sikh ‘warrior’ husband Inderjot Singh has hit the rocks.
The revelation ends speculation about their relationship, which was sealed with a spectacular Sikh ceremony at dawn at the holy Golden Temple of Amritsar in October 2010, when Alexandra wore a turban, traditional Sikh dress and no make-up. Her father – disgraced former Tory minister Jonathan Aitken – confirmed that their relationship was over, and went on to cast doubt on whether it was a legal arrangement in the first place.
Speaking at the launch of Antonia Fraser’s autobiography, My History, last week, Jonathan told me: ‘They were not married and they are now detached. It was more a colourful, folklore ceremony than a proper ceremony. I think both sides know the marriage is over, if it ever was a marriage. Their position is they are not married.’
Before she met Inderjot, party-loving Alexandra spent years falling in and out of nightclubs in London and featured in revealing modelling assignments for magazines.
But she then became a devout follower of Sikhism and changed her name to Uttrang Kaur Khalsa, retreating to a devout life in Northern India. When asked recently how she was enjoying married life Alexandra, 36, would only say: ‘God is my true love.’ It seems that although the marriage is over, her devotion to Sikhism prevails. ‘She has a devout, happy life near Amritsar living as a Sikh and is supported by her parents,’ said Jonathan, 72, who was jailed in 1999 for perjury and perverting the course of justice. He says he speaks to Alexandra every week. A close friend, who asked not to be named, agreed Alexandra’s marriage was not legally binding. ‘I didn’t see any paperwork,’ they said.
