Kane may become able Saint

- By Mark Guidi

BRIAN EASTON is sure Chris Kane has all the attributes to do as well at St Johnstone as Stevie May.

As a teenager, May went out on loan to Alloa and Hamilton in the lower leagues to learn his trade and came back to Perth ready to play in the top flight.

He scored goals for fun last season and Sheffield Wednesday paid £800,000 for him last summer. He has since made his full Scotland debut.

After being on loan at Dumbarton for the first half of the season, Kane, 20, made his first start for Saints on Friday night in the 1-1 draw. He caused experienced Dons defenders Mark Reynolds and Andrew Considine more than a few problems.

Easton expects Kane to play a big part for Tommy Wright’s team in the remainder of the campaign, saying: ‘Kane has been in the goals for the Under-20s and has played well on loan spells at Dumbarton.

‘I was pleased he started against Aberdeen. It was a lot to ask from him but he has energy, he works hard and will score a lot of goals.

‘He has an eye for goal that you can’t teach. It was the same when Stevie May came into the team last season and a lot of people didn’t know what to expect.

‘So, young Kane can look at May and the way he progressed and hopefully he can do the same.’

Easton was delighted with Friday’s display by Saints, especially after their inspid 2-0 loss in Inverness three days earlier.

He said: ‘We just didn’t get going on Tuesday night. It was a tough game against Aberdeen and it was good to come away with a point.’
