Smith sets sights on starting XI

- By Mark Guidi

HAVING made his debut as a 16-year-old in April, 2012 in a 2-0 league win at Inverness Caley Thistle, Cammy Smith feels it’s time he pushed on to become a regular starter for Aberdeen.

The attacking midfielder came off the bench at half-time for Willo Flood on Friday night and impressed in the 1-1 draw at St Johnstone.

His clever movement cause problems for the Saints defence and he almost scored the winner in the 80th minute with a flashing header.

That was his 66th appearance for the Dons and 47 have been as a substitute.

He is now at the stage of finding that frustrating.

He would welcome nothing more than Derek McInnes giving him the nod from the start against Dundee United on Saturday in the League Cup semifinal but knows it’s not easy trying to dislodge the likes of Adam Rooney, Niall McGinn, Peter Pawlett or David Goodwillie.

Smith, 19, said: ‘I feel OK but I still know there’s a lot more to come from myself. The second-half performance from the team all round was better than the first.

‘I played my part in that, so that’s good, but the main thing is we didn’t come away with the three points. That’s disappointing.

‘I’m ready to push on. It feels like I’ve been around for ages, since I was 16. I just need to keep believing in myself, keep being patient and do what I can when I can.

‘The manager’s good and I’m enjoying training, so hopefully I do become a regular soon.’
