We’ll spur Oduwa on to more glory, says Warburton

- By Fraser Mackie

NATHAN ODUWA played a part in three Rangers goals as he provided a cutting-edge response to the cutting comments about his showboating skills.

The Spurs loanee, who introduced himself to Scottish football with trickery branded disrespectful at Alloa, received a standing ovation from the Ibrox audience and the acclaim of his team-mates.

The winger won one of Martyn Waghorn’s two penalties and teed up goals for James Tavernier and Barrie McKay as Rangers ran riot. Lee Wallace had opened the scoring on four minutes.

Oduwa’s magic will be a pleasure to watch, a pain for defenders and produce plenty by way of an end product on this evidence as he tries to turn himself into a Tottenham first-team star in time for next season.

‘I’m delighted for Nathan,’ said Rangers manager Mark Warburton. ‘He knows what he has to do. He’s got a big ask. He’s 19 and his aim must be to break into the Spurs side.

‘He knows the level he has to reach and the type of players he has to be better than to achieve that goal. He showed good quality, work rate and team work. Nathan deserved the applause he received.

‘I’m delighted for him and the team. The discipline and focus were really good.’

Rangers skipper Wallace was among those players to show their appreciation for Oduwa’s talents as he created havoc until his late substitution.

‘Nathan is a confident player, technically very gifted,’ said Wallace. ‘He can go both ways, he’s got a step-over, a trick. We strongly encourage all that.

‘I firmly believe he’s in great hands here. He’s going to learn every day, improve and go back to Spurs, hopefully pushing for a first-team spot.’

Warburton’s record-breaking start to a Rangers managerial career of nine successive wins in all competitions left Raith boss Ray McKinnon impressed.

‘They’re a proper outfit,’ he said. ‘An exceptional team playing with extreme confidence. On that form, there’s no reason why they can’t go through the league season unbeaten.’
