The bubble has not burst, declares Robson

- By Graeme Croser

the wheels had fallen off the Aberdeen bandwagon.

‘I don’t see any bubble bursting,’ he said. ‘We’ve taken 24 points out of 30, so I don’t think that’s a bad return. We know today’s performance wasn’t good enough. I’d be quite happy to go out and play tomorrow to put it right.’

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright, meanwhile, hailed his team’s stunning victory as the equal of any of the big-game results his side have produced during his three years in charge of the club.

Wright managed Saints to their Scottish Cup victory in 2014 and has also enjoyed memorable European nights against Rosenborg and Lucerne. More recently, his team went to Ibrox and knocked Rangers out of the League Cup — but he regarded this performance as being on a par with any during his tenure.

‘To score five goals here is something special and you have to do something special to achieve that.

‘Aberdeen are a top side and a top club. They have one of the best managers in Scotland and they have a really good squad.

‘For us to come up here and get that kind of result is right up there with some of the good results we have had.’

Saints’ two-goal striker Steven MacLean milked his celebrations in front of the Aberdeen fans at Pittodrie — then paid tribute to the home crowd for applauding the St Johnstone players off the park.

MacLean headed home twice in quick succession just after half-time to complete an emphatic victory and celebrated one at each of the two corner flags at the Merkland Road end of the stadium.

The striker, who had a brief loan spell at Aberdeen from Plymouth five years ago, revealed that referee Alan Muir had asked him to rein in his delight but he insisted the Dons supporters had taken the defeat with good grace.

He said: ‘The referee told me to calm down, but when you score you kind of forget where you are a wee bit.

‘The Aberdeen fans gave me a wee bit of stick but it’s good banter, I like it. It makes me want to do better and, coming off at the end, the Aberdeen fans actually clapped us, and we clapped them back.

‘It just shows you they appreciated our performance today, so fair play to them.’

He added: ‘I was delighted to get a couple of goals and more than delighted for the team to score five here.

‘It just shows you how well we’ve been attacking this season. At this moment, we are clinical in front of goal.’
