Tycoons ignore real dangers of remaining in EU

-

What absolute nonsense from the former chiefs of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and B&Q in The Mail on Sunday last week. They said that leaving the EU would lead to shop prices rocketing. But, more importantly, the EU is a total disaster: terrorists are let in, and there is rampant unemployment and failing economies in many member states.

If we remain in the EU, in all likelihood we will have to borrow money to bail out some of these countries. As for Sir Terry Leahy, Justin King, Marc Bolland and Sir Ian Cheshire, they all seem to be yesterday’s men.

One cannot help but notice that the ‘staying in’ groups do not represent the ‘ordinary’ people of the UK – just business people and politicians. When are the people going to join in the debate? The answer is on June 23.David Harvey,

Chippenham, Wiltshire We must stay in the EU. If we leave, it will be an economic disaster resulting in massive unemployment and loss of trade. Our exports to the EU are worth an awful lot of money. OK, we contribute a lot of revenue, but if you belong to the club then you must expect to pay the fees. An ‘out’ vote will leave us as a banana republic, a service country, grateful for any scraps of business that fall from the table of international commerce. Our days of having an empire and trading with them are long gone. We must not let our hearts rule our heads.

Colin Baker, Wellington, Somerset

The former heads of our major supermarkets want us to stay in the EU. Would the fact that the depots and stores of their old companies are staffed mainly by Eastern Europeans have anything to do with it? Michael Adams, Clifton upon

Perhaps it is time we should all go back to being friendly trading partners as we were when we signed up for the European Economic Community in 1973. Norway is a good example of how a nation outside the EU can be independent but still trade and have a good relationship with its neighbours.

They believe in one important thing – that a nation and its people should always decide its own destiny. And that is democracy.

Chris Mack, Abingdon, Oxfordshire

When will they start building the extension to the House of Lords – to accommodate all the newly elevated business leaders and actors who have helped David Cameron and George Osborne spread doom and gloom about leaving the EU?
