The wheels come off for Spencer and his lover after ‘exercise bike’ bust-up
AFTER a week in which his brother James made his engagement to Pippa Middleton public, I fear the writing is on the wall for Spencer Matthews’s relationship with Margot Robart – his first serious girlfriend in years.
Those close to Spencer have been hopeful that the beautiful French businesswoman would be the girl to finally tame the playboy who claims to have bedded 1,000 women since first starring in reality show Made In Chelsea in 2011.
But friends tell me their relationship has become increasingly volatile – veering from passionate love declarations to fiery rows.
Last week fitness junkie Spencer, 26, and Margot, 25, had a row in the middle of an exercise class at trendy Kensington workout studio Core Collective, which is popular with Made In Chelsea cast members. The spat erupted after Margot and Spencer took part in a 45-minute high-intensity interval training class, in which participants are often on the brink of collapse as they burn up to 800 calories.
At the end of the punishing workout, Spencer apparently insisted Margot join him in another exercise session. She could be seen resisting as Spencer dragged her into the spinning class – which can burn off another 600 calories.
Once inside the new studio, Margot barely pedalled her static bike, preferring instead, it seemed, to expend her remaining energy in a bitter argument with Spencer conducted in her native French.
Their classmates may not have understood every nuance, but the exhaustion and misery on Margot’s face was clear for all to see. Spencer was later seen cheering and fist-pumping, while Margot rested limply on the handlebars.
Last year, Spencer was kicked off I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here after admitting he was addicted to steroids but sources say he plans to return to the jungle, a move likely to cause consternation among members of the Royal Family with whom he is now connected. On Monday, as news of his brother’s engagement began to leak out among friends, Spencer appeared on ITV’s Loose Women, where he sat on a throne and was lauded as having ‘royal connections’.
Margot, who runs a VIP concierge service based on St Bart’s in the Caribbean, once said of their relationship: ‘I do all the grafting while he is off living the high life.’
A pal tells me: ‘Spencer likes to publicly declare his undying love for her, but I’m not sure how happy they are. Friends aren’t expecting it to last the summer.’
