‘Burnley loss is a wake-up call’

of the Ladbrokes Premiership kick-off against Hamilton next Saturday.

A Ben Mee own goal was the only Rangers reply to a great display from the visitors and particularly striker Gray, who tormented Rob Kiernan and Clint Hill before Wilson replaced the latter midway through the second half.

Wilson said: ‘That was an ideal test for us before next week and, after the build-up we’ve had, this was always going to be the test.

‘We weren’t quite up to it. It’s disappointing but it shows us that we’ve got a lot of work to do.

‘If it’s going to act as an early wake-up call, it’s better now than six or 10 games into the season because we can address it now and move forward.

‘The biggest lesson from Burnley is their work ethic and how they press as a team. We have to develop that. We have a lot of talent in our team but hard work has to come first. But we’ll learn from it and won’t get too down.

‘There’s been a big build-up because we’re back in the Premiership. The game against Hamilton will be a sellout and we’ll need to produce a performance and win. We’re looking forward to it.’

Yesterday’s final work out confirmed Warburton’s concerns that the League Cup did not provide his team with the build-up in quality to the competitive league action.

‘(Burnley manager) Sean Dyche said to me they tried to analyse us to see what we did at set-pieces over the last two games but we haven’t had a corner against us,’ said Warburton. ‘That’s not being disrespectful, it’s a fact.

‘So we weren’t challenged enough. You can’t build up and have the games that we’ve had. But today was really good for us.’
