JOB DONE AS McGHEE’S MEN STEP UP TO SINK STRANRAER

-

MARK McGHEE felt it was job done after watching his side put in a dominant display to beat Stranraer in their final group match.

Second-half strikes from Chris Cadden, Marvin Johnson and Scott McDonald gave his side an easy victory.

McGhee was pleased with how well his new signings have settled into his squad and singled out Cadden for praise.

He said: ‘I think we made chances and it took us a little while to take them but eventually we got there.

‘All round, it was solid. The new players showed well, they look as if they’re fit and ready for the start of the league programme.

‘Cadden should be getting goals. His energy is boundless and he has to channel it and today he did and he was great.’

Patient build-up play from the Steelmen saw them break the deadlock five minutes into the restart. Good possession worked the ball to Cadden, who was able to cut in from the corner of the box and drive a low, right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

McGhee’s men were pushing for the second goal to put the game to bed and should have done so with 10 minutes left but Johnson pulled his shot wide when he was clean through.

Johnson atoned for that miss on 84 minutes when he put his side two goals up, coolly slotting home after Cadden cut the ball back to him from the byeline.

He then turned provider three minutes later, when his rampaging run down the left allowed him to reach the box and clip a cross to McDonald who was unmarked in the six-yard box to head home.
