Now selfies get a slot on the First Minister’s schedule
SHE has never been shy of posing for a picture – with sports stars, celebs, pets, children, babies, fans and even voters.
But now it appears taking selfies has become official business for Nicola Sturgeon. The agenda for a recent event scheduled a specific slot for ‘Selfies with the First Minister’.
Time for mobile phone pictures was set aside when Miss Sturgeon visited Ayrshire College’s Kilwinning campus for the official launch of the #ThisAyrshireGirlCan initiative, a campaign aiming to persuade young women to take up traditionally maledominated careers.
The agenda for the event laid out a clear timetable, including: ‘10.55am – Selfies with the First Minister.’
At the event, which took place in March, Miss Sturgeon posed for numerous selfies with students and used a phone herself to take shots which have been used on the Scottish Government website.
Details of her official selfie have just come to light, prompting Mid-Scotland and Fife Tory MSP Murdo Fraser to say: ‘This is the type of behaviour you expect from the Kardashians or the stars of TOWIE, not the First Minister of Scotland.
‘I would encourage Nicola Sturgeon to put down the selfie stick and pick up the mantle of governing Scotland.’
A source involved with the visit said: ‘It was good that she came and those involved appreciated her time, but you are always left with a nagging feeling everything ultimately comes down to promoting Nicola herself.’
When asked whether the First Minister usually set aside time on official engagements for taking selfies, the Scottish Government said: ‘The taking of selfies does not form part of an official visit by the First Minister; therefore, no time is set aside for the First Minister to do this whilst on official Scottish Government business.’
