has waded into an argument with Mary Berry about deep-fat fryers, claiming ‘every home should have one’ and that ‘Britain was built on chips and spam fritters’. That’s right up there with the then Labour Health Secretary John Reid in 2004 claiming smoking was one of the few pleasures left for ‘a 21-year-old single mother-of-three living in a council sink estate’.

I’m not saying eating Mary’s cakes is the epitome of healthy living, but a little sugar here and there isn’t going to kill you. Relying on a deep-fat fryer in the kitchen, however, has a pretty strong chance of giving you a major nudge toward that coronary.
