Liz pedals a wheelie good idea

-

Your picture of Liz Jones riding a bike with stabilisers last week, and her accompanying piece, were amusing, and it is good that she has highlighted the importance of being safe on a bike. Even Sir Richard Branson, an experienced cyclist, had a nasty accident when his twowheel cycle hit a speed bump. Any small pits, bumps or small items on the road can mean disaster for even the best cyclists. I think adult tricycles are a much better idea as they’re more stable. They take up a bit more room and may not look ‘cool’, but much better that than ending up in hospital. Ann Wills, Ruislip, Middlesex Not only do adults with stabilisers on their bikes look stupid, but they are also a danger to themselves and people on the road. After the success of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton in the Olympics in 2012, adults taking up cycling increased tenfold, so who could blame Halfords for trying to make a quick buck selling stabilisers in the hope that the cyclists who won gold in Rio might inspire more people to take up the sport? Learners should begin in the park until they are confident enough to cycle on the roads without stabilisers. E. Greenwood, Notting Hill, West London
