Bairns hit Elgin with goal blitz
IF this proves to be Elgin City’s final visit to Falkirk this term, one suspects manager Jim Weir will not be too disappointed.
The League Two outfit lost 3-0 in their first encounter against Peter Houston’s side in the Betfred Cup and were utterly outclassed yesterday as the Bairns claimed a 6-1 Irn-Bru Cup triumph.
It was apparent from the fifth minute that the Falkirk Stadium would prove an unhappy hunting ground yet again, with Bob McHugh looping a header beyond Cameron MacKay.
Myles Hippolyte saw his in-swinging ball find the far corner to double the hosts’ advantage, before a fine leftfoot drive by Mark Nicolson afforded Elgin some hope.
However, aspirations of a comeback were quickly dashed when John Baird rattled home his first goal of the season on the stroke of half-time.
A comfortable victory became a rout after the break, with a David McCracken header, an instinctive closerange McHugh drive and Baird’s second of the game sending the Bairns through to the fourth round in style.
‘We went about our business in the right manner and to get six goals is very satisfying,’ said Falkirk boss Houston.
